May 29, 2025MINUTE ORDER. The Court is aware of defendant's 9 Request for Leave to File. Defendant seeks to file as its answer to the 1 Complaint a letter to plaintiff. Defendant also seeks to proceed pro se. The Court will DENY leave to file for two reasons. First, defendant is a corporation and therefore may not appear pro se. See Rowland v. California Men's Colony, 506 U.S. 194, 20102 (1993) ("It has been the law for the better part of two centuries... that a corporation may appear in the federal courts only through licensed counsel."); Bristol Petroleum Corp. v. Harris, 901 F.2d 165, 166 n.1 (D.C. Cir. 1990) ("As a corporation, Bristol could not appear pro se."). Second, the purported answer does not conform to the Local Rules. See, e.g., LCvR 5.1. As such, it is hereby ORDERED that the 9 Request for Leave to File is DENIED. It is imperative that defendant retain counsel immediately if it wishes to be heard or to defend against this action. It is therefore further ORDERED that on or before June 6, 2025, defendant shall notify the Court in writing via notice of appearance of the counsel it has retained to represent its interests in this action. It is further ORDERED that defendant shall have until June 27, 2025 to file its answer to the Complaint. SO ORDERED. Signed by Judge Richard J. Leon on 5/29/2025. (lcrjl1)PACER Document
