A method for preparing synthesis gas comprises: (a) providing a hydrocarbon feedstock; (b) generating separate hydrogen and oxygen streams via water/steam electrolysis; (c) tubular steam reforming at least part of the feedstock; (d) autothermal reforming (ATR) the tubular reformed gas using at least part of the electrolytic oxygen to produce a stream of $\text{H}_2$, $\text{CO}$, and $\text{CO}_2$; (e) introducing at least part of the electrolytic hydrogen into the ATR gas stream; and (f) withdrawing synthesis gas. Electrolysis is operated such that all produced hydrogen is added downstream of step (d) to achieve a synthesis gas module $M = (\text{H}_2 - \text{CO}_2)/(\text{CO} + \text{CO}_2)$ between 1.9 and 2.2, preferably 2.0 to 2.1. Optional air separation may provide additional oxygen to the ATR.
